Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.

Peter Drucker

Big Dream Objective (BDO) is an audacious, work-related “stretch” objective that is dreamt up by an employee and cleared with his manager.

Common Purpose refers to the organization’s mission, values, and goals.

Conversation refers to a private one-to-one meeting, including a presentation by an employee and feedback from manager, followed by open discussion.

Feedback is the manager’s response to his or her direct reports.

Goal as used in LBO refers to organizational and departmental targets.

Manager is the person that a workbook user reports to.

Manager’s Guide is a document that explains the LBO philosophy and presents managerial techniques for getting the best work out of others. It is both a “Why” and “How to” guide to managerial excellence.

Mission Statement describes why an organization exists. It is the heart and soul of the organization. Often, businesses adopt mission statements to look good to customers, rather than to drive the organization’s efforts. Ideally, a mission statement clarifies the organization’s reason for existence.

Objective is an individual participant’s target.

Participant, Employee, or Contributor refers to a person using the LBO Workbook.

Update is a rewrite of an employee’s Big Dream Objective, in light of changes that occur.

Workbook is a step-by-step guide for employees to follow as they analyze their strengths, write about their existing job expectations as they see them, have one- to-one conversations with their managers, develop their personal Big Dream Objectives, and envision their ideal jobs.
